Although progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is perhaps the most serious side effect of Raptiva, several other types of infections have also been documented in patients using this drug to treat their psoriasis.

Meningitis, a dangerous potential Raptiva side effect, is an infection caused by inflammation of meninges, which are the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It can only be diagnosed with a spinal fluid tap. Symptoms of meningitis include fever, headaches, unexplained neck stiffness, confusion or disorientation, and ultra-sensitivity to lights and/or noises. While meningitis can be treated with antibiotics, the long term effects of this disease can be serious and include hydrocephalus, cognitive deficits, epilepsy and deafness.
Bacterial sepsis is another kind of serious infection that can occur when the immune system is weakened by the use of Raptiva. When bacteria invades a person's bloodstream, it can cause serious infections in organs such as the kidneys or lungs. Although sepsis can be treated with medication, it does have the potential to be fatal.
In addition, encephalitis is another side effect of Raptiva use. A rare, but life threatening disease, encephalitis is inflammation of the brain that occurs from a viral infection. Symptoms of encephalitis are usually flu-like and can include sore throat, headache, sensitivity to light, stiff neck and back, irritability and fatigue. More serious cases of encephalitis will usually manifest more intenses symptoms such as seizures, paralysis, memory loss and muscle weakness.
