Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common foot injuries in runners and people who do a lot of walking or standing, and it mainly affects people over 40. Plantar fasciitis is more common in women and often occurs in people who wear shoes with poor support or who suddenly gain weight, runners who increase their workouts or individuals with flat feet, tight Achilles tendons or tight calf muscles.

Plantar fasciitis is caused by an inflammation of the ligament that runs from the ball of the foot to the arch and into the heel bone. A person usually notices mild pain around the arch or heel that intensifies with time. People with plantar fasciitis will notice tenderness in the mornings that gets better as the foot warms up, and pain is most obvious after a workout.

There are several ways to treat plantar fasciitis, although it may take several months for the pain to disappear. Rest, arch supports, heel pads, orthotics, anti-inflammatory medication, stretching, taping and massage are all effective options.
