A physical therapist is trained to help patients regain activity, strength and motion after an injury or surgery. The therapist performs and teaches patients specific exercises and stretches that are used to treat the affected area. Physical therapists are specialists who understand all aspects of injuries, from how they occur to the limitations put on a patient after surgery to strengthening exercises for a speedy recovery to how to prevent future injuries.
There are several methods that a physical therapist may use to treat an injury. Stretching and strengthening exercises are almost always performed. These exercises maintain good range of motion and help regain the strength and endurance in muscles as they were prior to the injury.
Ice and heat therapy is also commonly used. This treatment helps to warm up and cool down muscles. They also increase blood flow and decrease swelling. Ultrasounds have a purpose similar to ice and heat therapy. By stimulating deep tissues of the body with high frequency sound waves, ultrasounds help to warm and increase blood flow to the tissues.
