Patellofemoral Instability

Patellofemoral instability causes the sensation that the kneecap is slipping away or loose. It can cause pain and swelling in the front of the knee. There are two types of patellofemoral instability: primary and secondary.

Primary instability is caused by over-flexible knee ligaments or a knee cap that is located to high in the knee joint, while secondary instability results from a knee dislocation. A knee brace and taping the kneecap can help correct instability problems and offer extra support. Surgery may be needed when other options fail.
