Passing Boats

Swimming or diving near boats can be quite dangerous as boats anchor in deeper waters, where strong currents or rocky terrain can carry away or injure swimmers. When swimming near boats, it is important to observe the following safety practices:

  • Never swim in a marked channel as boats with limited maneuvering abilities may pass by.
  • Avoid swimming in marinas as boats are constantly coming and going and boats plugged into an AC shore power can leak electricity into the water.
  • Illegal dumping of holding tanks may also make waters where large numbers of boats dock a bad place for swimming.
  • Don't swim in areas with a strong current or undertow.
  • Always enter the water gradually; never dive, as terrain under the boat may be rocky or uneven.
  • Boat engines should never be left running when there are swimmers in the water, as propellers and carbon monoxide fumes from a running generator can be fatal.
  • Wear a life jacket or flotation devices when swimming from a boat.
  • Make sure swimmers will be able to get back on the boat.
