Zoloft and Omphalocele

Omphalocele, which is among the reported SSRI birth defects, is an abdominal malformation in which the child's internal organs and intestines grow outside the body in a sac. In infants with omphalocele, the muscles of the abdominal wall do not form properly, allowing the stomach, liver and other organs to protrude outside of the child's body through the umbilical cord. A diagnosis of omphalocele can be made easily at birth and typically will not require any diagnostic testing.

Treatment for Omphalocele

When a child is born with omphalocele, the purpose of treatment will be to place the child's intestines and organs inside their body. The severity of the congenital birth defect will determine which route the child's treatment will take. When the child is born with a minor case of omphalocele, he or she will undergo surgery after delivery and may be kept in the hospital or on a ventilator to assist with breathing after the procedure. In severe cases of omphalocele, the child will have to be delivered via c-section. Any exposed organs will be wrapped and will return to the abdomen through their own means. After this, surgery will be required to close the abdominal wall; this surgery may not be performed until a year after the child's birth. During this time, the child may be at risk for a number of complications, including infection, respiratory problems, and feeding intolerance.
