Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), also known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD), is a rare, potentially deadly disease that causes fibrosis of the eyes, joints, skin and internal organs. While the exact cause has yet to be determined, the FDA has recently issued a Black Box Warning for gadolinium, an MRI contrast dye linked to NSF and NFD. Gadolinium is marketed under the brand names Magnevist, Omniscan, OptiMARK, MultiHance and ProHance. Several patients with severe kidney disease or renal illness who were administered this contrast agent during an MRI have developed nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis causes the skin to swell and tighten. The skin may change to a red or darkened color. Those severely afflicted by this disease may be unable to walk or extend their arms, legs, hands or feet. Symptoms of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) may take days or weeks to appear and can include the following:
As the disease progresses, the symptoms of gadolinium exposure become increasingly severe and can lead to death. Particularly, Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy can lead to death if internal organs become scarred. There has been no successful treatment of this disease, though improving kidney function can slow the disease.
