Muscle Contusion
A contusion is a common injury in contact sports and is caused by a direct blow to a muscle. A contusion can be intramuscular or intermuscular. In the former, the muscle is torn within the sheath that surrounds it. In the latter, the more serious of the two, the muscle and part of the sheath tear.
The symptoms of a contusion include pain at the site of impact and swelling or bruising. Oftentimes, movement is restricted. In severe cases walking will be impossible without the aid of crutches, and rest from sports for three to twelve weeks are necessary for recovery.
With contusions, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) should be applied. Massaging the area helps to quicken healing time, and a specialist will be able to recommend a rehabilitation program to improve flexibility and regain strength in the area.
