Mold & SBS
You probably overlook it, but toxic molds dwelling within the structures we live and work have the ability to make people sick. Groups such as the World Health Organization and US Environmental Protection Agency have tried to inform the public on the perils of toxic mold and other pollutants contributing to deplorable indoor air quality. The fact of the matter is Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) and other similar illnesses receive much less scrutiny than those stemming from smoking, car exhaust, and various forms of air contaminants.
SBS involves situations where a building's occupants undergo minor health and comfort changes that are somehow contributed to time spent in the facility. However, no distinct illnesses or causes of those feelings can be identified. The complaints may be confined to a specific room or sector, or they may not be localized to any particular part of the building. On the other hand, a Building Related Illness (BRI) is defined as symptoms of diagnosable illness that are validated and are directly credited to air pollutants inside the building.
A much more rare case is a blend of personal injury and workers' compensation. These circumstances may arise if an employee gets sick as a result of negligent maintenance of a facility that has no association with the actual employment. For example, someone working in an office building could become ill through exposure to excess mold growth brought on by water seeping through the poorly constructed roof. The employee is obviously not harmed while carrying out their daily occupational activities, but they still could be entitled to a worker's compensation claim and a personal injury claim against the building's owner or the company responsible for its upkeep.
