Sick Building Syndrome: mold contaminated air.

Mold Contamination

You may not realize it, but the buildings that we live and work in have the capacity to make people sick due to toxic mold. A few agencies, such as the World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, have attempted to educate the public about the dangers of toxic mold or other contaminants leading to poor indoor air quality. But Sick Building Syndrome and related illnesses receive far less attention than smoking, auto exhaust and other more well-known forms of air pollution. Do you feel you have suffered injuries from Sick Building Syndrome or any othe mold contamination injury?

The term "sick building syndrome" (SBS) is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified.

The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building. In contrast, the term "building related illness" (BRI) is used when symptoms of diagnosable illness are identified and can be attributed directly to airborne building contaminants.

A far less frequent type of case is a combination of personal injury and workers’ compensation. This situation may occur if a person is working for a company and the person becomes ill from the negligent maintenance of the building that is unrelated to the actual employment. An example is someone who works in an office and is made ill by excessive mold growth caused by water intrusion resulting from the poor construction of the building. In that case, the person is not injured while engaged in the business of their employer but may still be entitled to make a workers’ compensation claim and a claim for personal injuries against the owner or the maintenance company for the building.
