Misleading Yaz Ads

The FDA and several attorney generals have taken action against Bayer HealthCare after two misleading Yaz advertisements aired on television. The FDA is accusing Bayer HealthCare of deceiving the public about the use and safety of the Yaz birth control pill. According to the letter sent from the FDA to Bayer Healthcare, the pharmaceutical company's advertisements "broaden the drug's indication" and "minimize the serious risks" of Yaz.

Yaz has been approved by the FDA as a once-a-day birth control pill that can also treat Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, which causes severe physical and emotion problems related a women's menstrual cycle. The popular birth control pill is also FDA-approved to treat acne vulgaris in women aged 14 and older who choose to use an oral contraceptive to prevent unwanted pregnancy. However, the Yaz TV ads have misled many Americans to believe the birth control pill can treat symptoms of PMS, such as headaches, bloating and irritability. In addition, the deceiving ads also make it seem that Yaz can treat acne of all severities, while it has only been approved to treat moderate acne.

In addition to broadening the ability of its birth control pill, Bayer Healthcare has been accused of minimizing the serious side effects of Yaz. The FDA stated the fast-moving images and background music, which were aired when Yaz's serious side effects were listed, could be distracting to viewers. Some of these side effects included heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease and pulmonary embolism.
