Metatarsalgia is an inflammation of the joints in the toes, which causes pain and tenderness in the forefoot, especially when supporting weight. Metatarsalgia pain usually appears gradually, and flexing the toe downward can increase pain and discomfort, while tenderness can be noticed when pressing in on the joint.
This ailment is usually caused by high arches. Overpronation, an inward rolling of the foot and flattening of the arch, can provoke metatarsalgia. Tight extensor tendons of the toes can also cause problems.
X-Rays should be performed in order to determine the degree of injury. A shock absorbing insole may bring relief, as well as the use of ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain. The foot should also be padded in order to evenly redistribute body weight, reducing the chance of further injury and pain.
