Magnevist Risk

Magnevist (gadopentetate dimeglumine) is the brand name of a gadolinium based MRI contrast agent manufactured by Bayer-Schering and its subsidiary Berlex Laboratories. Magnevist is used by physicians to improve the visibility of internal structures during MRIs. It has been linked to a serious, life-threatening disease known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD), particularly in patients with renal conditions. NSF / NFD is a potentially fatal disease that causes fibrosis of body organs, resulting in the inability of body organs to work properly. There is no known cure for NSF.

On May 23, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that Bayer-Schering add a new boxed warning on Magnevist labeling because of reports linking the gadolinium contrast agent to Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis and Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy. In most patients, gadolinium is rapidly cleared from the body by the kidneys. However, patients with kidney problems may be unable to eliminate gadolinium from their bodies, leaving them at an elevated risk for developing NSF / NFD.

In June 2008, a gadolinium lawsuit was filed against Bayer-Schering and Berlex Laboratories by a Brooklyn Center, Minnesota woman who claims that she developed NSF after an imaging scan using Magnevist gadolinium contrast dye in March 2001. The woman was diagnosed with NSF in February 2007 and continues to suffer from severe, debilitating and progressive fibrotic changes caused by NSF. This has resulted in permanent disability, as well as severe disfigurement and impairment. The lawsuit alleges that Magnevist is defective, that the defendants failed to adequately test Magnevist, and that the defendants failed to warn patients about its potential to cause NSF.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis after being injected with Magnevist for an MRI or MRA, you may be entitled to compensation. In order to ensure that your legal rights are protected, contact Morgan & Morgan's gadolinium lawyers today.
