Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is a systemic condition in which excessive connective tissue forms in the skin and internal organs. It is a progressive disease and can eventually be fatal. NSF has been linked to the use of gadolinium based contrast dyes for MRI/MRA scans.
If you have a prior history of kidney disease and underwent an MRI or an MRA with a gadolinium dye, you may be at risk for NSF. Nearly all cases of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis can be directly attributed to gadolinium injections in patients with advanced or end-stage kidney disease. In addition, if you develop this serious medical condition, you may have some legal recourse against the negligent manufacturers of the gadolinium based contrast agent.
Gadolinium lawyers are now filing lawsuits against the makers of MRI gadolinium contrast dyes such as Omniscan and Magnevist on behalf of clients injured by gadolinium. These gadolinium lawsuits allege that the dye has caused Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) in patients who had kidney problems prior to undergoing their MRI. The suits also allege that patients were not properly warned about the risk of NSF and that the gadolinium dye manufacturers did not adequately test their products for these serious side effects.
Hundreds of NSF victims and their families have filed state and federal lawsuits against the makers of gadolinium contrast dyes for their injuries. In February 2008, the U. S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation designated the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio as the venue for NSF lawsuits pending in federal courts. As of September 24, 2008, there were 287 NSF lawsuits pending in the Multidistrict Litigation. Another 104 lawsuits have been filed in various state courts throughout the United States. Gadolinium contrast dye manufacturers Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Bracco Diagnostics, GE Healthcare and Mallinckrodt have all been named as defendants in the cases.
