Lateral (Outside) Knee Pain

The most common cause of pain to the outside of the knee is iliotibial band syndrome, which is common in runners. The knee can also be strained if you warm up improperly before exercising or have poor training techniques. Lateral knee pain is generally made worse by bending and flexing the knee, so it is particularly important to know how to weight train properly, as improperly practiced squats, lunges and hamstring curls can lead to injury.

Common lateral knee ailments include:

  • Iliotibial band friction syndrome(runners knee)
  • Patellofemoral instability
  • Lateral cartilage injury
