Knee Injuries

Lateral Cartilage Injury

A semicircular ring of cartilage helps the knee absorb shock. This cartilage can be damaged by a severe impact or by twisting the knee abnormally. When harm is done to the lateral cartilage, it results in pain along the outside of the knee that worsens when running, particularly uphill. A lump may also appear along the joint line of the knee.

In the event of an injury to the lateral cartilage, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) should be applied. A knee brace will help to support and protect the area during healing, while a specialist can recommend a rehabilitation and strengthening program.
