Ladders

Ladders and stairways are also a leading source of construction-site injury, causing approximately 24,882 injuries and 36 fatalities per year. Nearly half of these falls were serious enough to require time off from work.

Preventing ladder accidents is as simple as proper set-up and use. The following is a list of steps that should be followed whenever using a ladder:

  • Use the right kind of ladder for the job.
  • Before use, check ladder for structural damage, including split, bent, broken or missing rails, rungs, steps, cleats or safety devices.
  • Repair or replace damaged ladders immediately.
  • Before use, check ladder for grease or dirt that could cause slips or falls.
  • Make sure ladder is long enough to reach the work area.
  • Secure ladder to the wall or roof.
  • Make sure the base of the ladder is level and secure.
  • Make sure there is enough room to step safely off of the ladder.
  • Keep area around the base of the ladder clear of equipment and materials.
  • If a ladder is placed in front of a door, the door must be locked and blocked off.
  • Keep weight between the ladder supports, no leaning to the side.
  • Keep three points of contact with the ladder at all times.
  • Carry tools in a tool belt.
  • Never load ladders beyond the intended maximum capacity.
  • Avoid using metallic ladders for electrical work.
  • A ladder leveler should be used when working on uneven ground.
  • Spikes should be used to secure a ladder to soft ground, such as dirt and grass.
