Jet Skiing
A jet ski can give you an exciting, fast paced ride over the water, but it is important to know how to operate it properly first. Take a class and learn everything you can about driving the jet ski and find out how to properly maintain and care for it. No one should ever ride a jet ski without first learning how to steer and handle it in a safe manner.
Before you head out for a day of jet skiing, there are some important safety factors to keep in mind.
What you should bring
Anytime you use a jet ski, it is essential to wear a life vest. The same applies to any passengers who may be riding with you. Purchase Coast Guard approved vests that will protect you and keep you afloat if you fall into the water. It is also a good idea to carry a whistle with you. Keep it attached to your wrist at all times to be sure you don't lose it. This will come in handy if you crash the jet ski and need to attract attention to get help. Take a cell phone with you and leave it on dry land so you have it available in case there is an emergency and you need to call for help. It's also a good idea to bring a well stocked first aid kit so you will have basic medical supplies if you need them.
Before you get on the jet ski
Review a weather report before you go to make sure conditions will be clear and safe. If weather conditions are bad, wait and go another day. Do a thorough check of the machine before you operate it. Make sure it has enough fuel and appears to be in good running condition. Do not use it if you have any reason to believe it is not in peak shape. One of the most essential rules of operating a jet ski or any other form of machinery is to avoid alcohol until you are done riding. Drinking alcohol will slow your reflex time and that could cause you to get into an accident. It is never safe to operate any machinery while under the influence.
Appropriate attire
Anyone who will be on the jet ski should wear proper eye protection and shoes at all times. Jet skis move at fast speeds so it is necessary to protect your skin. Many riders wear wet suits, especially if the water is cold. This will help you to avoid the risk of hypothermia and keep you warm all day.
While using the jet ski
Familiarize yourself with the area you intend to ride in. Make sure you have a wide open spot that will offer you plenty of room to maneuver. Watch out for tree stumps in the water or other hazards that would be easy to crash into. A jet ski should not be used in water that is less than two feet deep. Otherwise it is possible for some debris to snag the bottom of the jet ski, or for the craft to hit the ground. Once you are certain that the area you intend to ride in is safe, remember to continually be aware of other vessels or people in the water. It is best to remain about 100 feet away from other riders, boats or people. Understand who has the right of way in any scenario - this is something you will learn when you take a class on how to operate the jet ski.
When you know how to properly operate a jet ski, and you take precautions to protect yourself and others you are ready for a thrilling day with friends and family on the water.
