Heel Pain

Heel pain is the most common problem affecting the foot and ankle area. Pain in this area is the result of stress on the heel bone and the tissues surrounding it and is usually caused by walking gait abnormalities and repetitive activity and pounding rather than a single traumatic incident. Heel pain can also be caused by general health conditions, such as arthritis, gout and Achilles tendonitis, the inflammation of the Achilles tendon.

When pain is detected, it is always best to rest and keep off of the foot as much as possible to avoid the development of a chronic condition. For more severe conditions, a doctor can prescribe the use of orthotics or surgery may be necessary.

Common heel ailments include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Bruised heel/policeman's heel
  • Achilles bursitis
  • Blisters
  • Bone spurs
  • Excessive Pronation
  • Cracked heels
  • Heel Fractures
  • Haglund's Deformity
