Heavy Machinery

The operation of heavy machinery can be extremely dangerous if the operator is impaired, not paying attention or not following the proper safety precautions. The following are the basic guidelines that all employees operating heavy machinery must follow:

  • Any employee using the machinery must be properly trained and knowledgeable about the equipment he or she is using.
  • Machinery must never be used when the employee is drowsy, intoxicated or taking prescription medication that may impair performance.
  • Use machinery specific to the job at hand. Never use it for a job for which the equipment was not manufactured.
  • Never stress or overload machinery.
  • Make sure that the machinery has no defects and is in proper working condition before beginning a job.
  • Regular inspections and maintenance of machinery should be conducted.

Accidents occur as the result of preventable mistakes. To further ensure accident prevention, it is also important to take the following steps before leaving heavy machinery unattended:

  • Turn off engine.
  • Leave transmission in neutral.
  • All buckets, tools and other equipment should be left on the ground.
  • Make sure equipment is secure against movement.
  • Always keep shields and safety guards in place.
  • Never get on or off machinery when in motion.
  • Never adjust or lubricate a running engine.
  • Turn engine off when refueling.
  • Steer clear of utilities and power lines.
