Hamstring Tendon Strain

The hamstring consists of three parts: the biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus. These muscles connect to the back of the knee with the help of tendons. In the case of a hamstring tendon strain, the tendons are torn, usually due to a sudden explosive movement or kicking motion. A tear causes a sudden sharp pain in the back of the knee accompanied by tenderness and swelling. Bending the knee after a hamstring tendon stain is extremely painful.

To treat this type of injury, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) should be applied, and after 48 hours heat should be placed on the area. Anti-inflammatory medicine helps ease the pain. A specialist can recommend a stretching and strengthening regimen. In serious cases, surgery may be needed to correct the problem.
