Gambling

Participating in any game of chance for money is Gambling. There is an entrance fee into these games, but they come with the potential of making much more money back. Gambling is a type of "get rich quick" scheme in which a person bets that they will be able to win a large sum of cash in the game.

Casinos

Many games of chance are played in Casinos. These are usually large, fancy buildings with bright neon lights designed to stimulate the senses and encourage people to stay where they are. Most casinos offer free drink service to provide extra incentives to gamblers not to leave. Casinos offer a variety of games including black jack, poker, craps tables and roulette wheels.

For years, many states outlawed gambling and therefore casinos. To get around this rule, steamboat casinos were created that could operate on the water and out of the jurisdiction of the gambling ban.

Reservation Gambling

Due to the fact that Native American Reservations were not under direct control of the states they were in, they could not be subjected to laws that prohibited gambling. This fact led to many tribes building Casinos on their land. These became extremely popular destinations, and the number of Reservation Casinos grew steadily throughout the 1980's and 1990's. They provided people with a place to play most games of chance without having to go to key gambling spots such as Las Vegas. To this end, these Casinos were worthwhile to everyone as they offered citizens of many states an outlet for gambling, and created a new source of revenue for Indian Tribes.

Lotteries

The Lottery is a state sponsored game of chance in which people may purchase tickets in the hopes of winning a large jackpot. Lottery tickets include scratchers, which have small sections that can be scraped off to reveal whether or not that ticket is a prize winner, or a numbers game in which ticket purchasers select numbers in the hopes of choosing the exact numbers that will later be selected at random. A ticket which matches all six numbers can be win a very large dollar amount.

Gambling Related Crimes

One of the major problems with gambling is that it can be extremely addictive. People are subject to lose large amounts of money, and will sometimes do whatever it takes to get more money, either in the hopes of breaking even, or returning to gamble again.

This type of addiction has led to theft, muggings and robberies in areas with major casinos. Gamblers have also been known to steal from the corporations they work for by using company funds for their personal gambling habits. While most people who gamble will never commit these crimes, it is a major issue in certain cities where gambling makes up a large portion of the local economy.

Even though most people realize that the odds are stacked against them when they gamble, the thrill of the game and the possibility of being the one to win big is more than enough for millions of people every year who visit areas like Las Vegas and Atlantic City to stay in the resorts and gamble in the Casinos.
