Floods

Flooding, the most common of all natural disasters, is caused by heavy rains, overflowing rivers, ocean waves that come onshore, snow that melts too fast and breaking dam levees. Flooding can range from a few inches to several tens of feet, and floods that come very quickly are called flashfloods.

Flooding precautions include:

  • Get to high ground when a flashflood has been announced.
  • Don't put valuable items or appliances in basements where they are most likely to be flooded.
  • A house's main breaker and utility meters should be raised above the areas flood level.
  • Never step into flood water as the chances of electrocution or exposure to biochemical hazardous elements are high.
  • Purchase flood insurance for your home.
