FDA Warnings for Transvaginal Mesh

Due to the numerous reports of side effects, complications, and injuries related to transvaginal mesh use, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued FDA transvaginal mesh warnings in 2008 and 2011. The latest FDA transvaginal mesh warning concluded that serious complications from these products are not rare. Women who have suffered injury from products like Bard’s Avaulta or similar meshes may be able to seek compensation from the manufacturer for their medical bills and pain and suffering.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Surgical meshes have been used on thousands of women to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). These conditions are a result of the relaxation of tissues that hold the bladder, bowels, and reproductive organs in place, causing them to slide forward and downwards. This can place pressure on the bladder, causing incontinence, and cause vaginal prolapse. Organs may prolapse close to or even outside the vaginal opening. This condition is not only unsightly and distressing; it can cause severe discomfort and disrupt sexual function. Transvaginal mesh is often used to reinforce the weakened vaginal walls and give support to the pelvic organs.

FDA Transvaginal Mesh Alerts

Following up on an alert released in 2008, a recent FDA transvaginal mesh warning was issued on July 13, 2011. This warning concluded that serious complications from transvaginal mesh use are not rare and urged doctors and patients to consider all other alternatives when treating pelvic organ prolapse. The most common reported transvaginal mesh side effect is the erosion of mesh through the vaginal walls. This painful complication can lead to a host of other issues, including:

  • Infection and bleeding
  • Vaginal scarring
  • Contraction or shortening of the vagina
  • Pain during sex (dyspareunia)
  • Pain when urinating
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Organ perforation, including bladder, bowels, and blood vessels
  • Reappearance of prolapse or incontinence

Nearly 3,000 incidences of transvaginal mesh complications were reported to the FDA between 2008 and 2010.
