FDA Actos Bladder Cancer Announcement

An Actos bladder cancer FDA announcement was released in June 2011 to inform the public that use of the diabetes drug Actos (pioglitazone) for more than a year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Actos Warning Bladder Cancer: FDA Recommendations

Due to concerns of an Actos bladder cancer link, the FDA made several changes and recommendations regarding the drug and other diabetes medications containing pioglitazone. The agency advised that doctors should not prescribe Actos to bladder cancer patients and should use the drug with caution in those with a history of the disease. They also advised patients to be on alert for signs which may indicate bladder cancer, such as:

• Urgent need to urinate
• Lower abdominal or back pain
• Blood in the urine
• Pain while urinating
