Excessive Pronation

Pronation is the normal motion of flattening the arch of the foot, thereby allowing it to adapt to ground surfaces and absorb shock when walking. As a person walks, the heel hits the ground first, then weight shifts to the outside of the foot and moves toward the big toe. When the arch rises, the foot generally rolls up and out, becoming rigid as it lifts the body.

Excessive pronation is when the foot experiences excessive inward motion. This abnormal amount of pronation can be rather painful, as it leads to an excessive amount of stretching of the heel's ligaments and tendons. Excessive pronation can contribute to injury to other parts of the body, such as the hip, knee and lower back.
