A doctor has many legal, ethical and moral duties and responsibilities. These responsibilities are outlined in the Hippocratic Oath taken by all doctors. The oath is named after Hippocrates, the father of medicine, because he is widely believed to have written it in the IV century BC.
One of the best known responsibilities of a doctor is to maintain doctor-patient privacy. This means that a doctor can not disclose medical information about a patient to anyone, including other doctors and the patient's family members. The patient is to be treated with courtesy and respect at all times.
A doctor should always discuss care and treatment options with the patient and provide complete information about these matters so that the patient can make an informed decision. A doctor must provide medical care to patients, regardless of race, sex, politics, sexual orientation, income, etc. Only the law can limit a patient from viewing his or her medical records, which a doctor must otherwise present upon request.
