Disaster relief is intervention designed to meet the immediate needs of the victims of a disastrous occurrence. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in charge of disaster release on a federal level. FEMA coordinates response to disasters that overwhelm the resources of local and state authorities.
Disasters include hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes or other similarly devastating natural events. Disaster relief personnel help disaster victims who have lost their homes find a place to stay, repair homes, conduct search and rescues, provide medical care and bring necessary supplies, such as food, bottled water, medication, etc.
Disaster relief workers are exposed to a wide variety of occupational hazards, including falls, cuts and fractures, infectious disease, lower back injury, hazardous materials exposure, stress, extended work hours, and exposure to temperature extremes.
