There are a variety of national and local centers that offer support to people with mental and physical disabilities. Many centers offer websites, so people leading sedentary lifestyles can access helpful resources online. Each support center has individual goals, but they do share some commonalities that could be beneficial to any disabled person:
Information sharing
The center serves as a place where resources, ideas, data from research, and other information are disseminated.
Financial independence
Educational accolades and resumes may be made accessible to the public. The center initiates special projects to encourage employment among the disabled, while working closely with other nonprofit organizations to accomplish this goal. Resources on employment and working from home are also available. Some centers may offer free Internet courses, job opportunities, and a forum to post resumes. Scholarship information is readily available, and sometimes they may even provide their own scholarships if money is available.
Current events
The disabled community is kept updated on pressing issues that directly affect them through center newsletters or online newsgroups. Disability centers often promote self-advocacy and encourage affiliates to form groups for the purpose of interacting with government officials to lobby or voice concerns when an issue arises that hits close to home.
Voter education
Members are informed as to where political candidates stand on disabilities and what policies they plan to incorporate to improve the lives of people with disabilities if they are elected to office.
Raising public awareness
Member talents and achievements are proudly displayed at the facility and on the website. Other programs, such as books, videos, and stage performances, are funded by the centers to further endorse public awareness and respect for people who may be a little different. These various media outlets are usually geared toward kids because we are most impressionable at a young age.
Creating a positive environment
Good role models and a positive environment encourage members to aim for excellence in their own way by using the strengths that they still possess to their advantage. Media advocating for equality and other rights will also make the disabled feel better about themselves.
Fun, recreation, and socialization
Resources are available regarding sports, travel, theater, meeting people with similar circumstances, and organizing clubs.
