Deltoid Muscle Strain
The deltoid muscle is the primary shoulder muscle and is responsible for lifting the arm sideways. The front of the muscle assists in moving the arm forward, and the back of the muscle aids in backward motion. A deltoid muscle is essentially a tear in the muscle. A strain causes tightness and swelling, and makes it difficult to use the arm properly. To treat a strain, the shoulder should be iced for three to five days. After this time, light exercises and stretching can help to heal the muscle. Massaging the area also speeds up recovery.
Serious strains make it is impossible to move the arm and there is severe pain. Severe swelling appears immediately. With this type of strain, apply the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) immediately. Returning to normal activities usually takes at least three weeks. During this time, the muscle should be rested. Anti-inflammatory medicines help to ease the pain. A doctor can suggest a rehabilitation program to strengthen the muscles. In serious cases, surgery may be needed.
