On Jan. 11, 2012, a Royal Caribbean pool attendant was reportedly indicted on a single count of sex abuse of a minor, following allegations that he raped a young girl who was vacationing with her family. Fabian Palmer, 25, is accused of luring the girl into a locker room aboard the vessel and having sex with her. This alleged rape is the latest in a recent string of sexual assaults on cruise ships, which also includes an incident involving a 15-year-old Royal Caribbean passenger who claims she was raped by two men while onboard.
The family of the minor who claims she was attacked by Palmer has retained the services of our law firm. When a cruise ship passenger is raped or sexually assaulted, the cruise line could be held accountable if it failed to provide a reasonably safe environment. To prevent foreseeable injury, cruise lines must take certain safety measures, such as screening potential employees, lighting public areas and using security personnel and cameras. Just as public establishments have a duty to keep their patrons safe, cruise lines also have a responsibility to care for their passengers.
If you or a loved one was raped aboard a cruise ship, you may have a legal claim against the cruise liner if it was negligent in causing your injury. Potentially, you could pursue compensation for medical bills, emotional anguish and other damages stemming from the incident. While it may be difficult to come forward with your claim, bringing light to these incidents can help remind cruise lines of their responsibility to keep their passengers safe and potentially prevent future instances of rape or sexual assault aboard these vessels.
