Cracked Heels

Cracked heels are generally caused by dry skin. However, dry, cracking skin can be the symptom of a more serious ailment, such as diabetes or loss of nerve function (autonomic neuropathy).

Wearing open-back shoes, an increase in weight and friction from the back of shoes can all contribute to worsening the condition. Skin and foot creams should be used to keep the heel moisturized and reduce cracking. If there are open sores on the heel, a foot and ankle surgeon should be consulted.
