When homeowners first began to report signs of defective drywall, the only manufacturer to be implicated was Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. Ltd. of China. Since the initial reports, many building and supply companies, as well as one possible China-based exporter, Rothchilt International Ltd., have been associated with the defective drywall. In addition, while complaints of defective Chinese drywall were first limited to Florida and Virginia, it is now reported that at least 23 states, and the District of Columbia, have used this defective construction material.

The second largest building company in the nation (by volume), Lennar Homes, reportedly built many of the homes that have been negatively affected by the defective Chinese drywall. The company is currently testing developments that it has built and is working with the Florida Health Department. Lennar has also relocated several families, in order to replace the drywall in their homes. However, Lennar is not the only building company which used drywall imported from China.
Taylor Morrison has also acknowledged the presence of defective drywall in some of its houses. The London-based builder has identified at least eight houses in Florida with faulty Chinese drywall and is relocating these home owners while it replaces the defective material.

The legal issues associated with the defective drywall are extensive. Many have been forced to move out of their homes, have suffered illness, and have spent thousands of dollars to repair damaged pipes, wiring, and air conditioning systems. Additionally, Chinese drywall problems may adversely affect the values of homes, and even make them impossible to sell. This comes on top of the already reduced property values due to the collapse of the real estate market.
