Coccyx Pain
The coccyx is the tailbone, and men are five times more likely than women to experience pain in this area. Injury to the coccyx results in pain at the base of the spine and pain in the tailbone while sitting or directly after sitting. When changing position from sitting to standing, there may be a sharp pain in the tailbone.
Pain in this region can result from inflammation in the area, which is common when a person has an unstable coccyx. Pain is also attributable to a fall or trauma to the base of the spine. Continuously straining or overusing the coccyx in sports like cycling or rowing are also possible causes of pain.
To find relief from coccyx pain, avoid sitting down, since sitting can aggravate the injury. Apply ice to the area, followed by heat. An unstable coccyx usually heals itself within a few weeks or months. A doctor may prescribe physiotherapy which involves stretching and massaging the affected muscles.
