Coast Guard
The Coast Guard is the organization responsible for services in national waters, including enforcement of maritime law and boarder control. Coast Guard workers use ships and aircraft to complete their assigned tasks, which range law enforcement to military duties.
Hazards to which Coast Guard workers are exposed include:
- Fall from a ship into the water or onto a deck.
- Fall on deck due to cramped ship quarters, running in an emergency situation, stormy weather, sudden ship maneuvers, etc.
- Cargo cave-in or falling cargo.
- Entanglement in mooring lines.
- Overexertion from moving heavy loads.
- Steam and sun burns.
- Electric shock from working with faulty electrical equipment.
- Poisoning by hazardous cargo or contaminated food or water.
- Cuts from dealing with sharp cargo.
- Exposure to excessive vibration and noise caused by ship engines.
- Exposure to extreme weather: cold, heat, rain, snow, winds, humidity, etc.
