Cleanliness

In a sports environment, the transmission of infectious disease is common among athletes. Sports that use large amounts of shared equipment, such as in contact sports, are more prone to outbreaks of infectious diseases. To reduce the possibility of spreading disease, proper hygiene is the key.

Practicing good hygiene is not a difficult task, but it is the responsibility of the coach and athletic trainer to enforce such practices. Athletes should shower after each practice or competition and should not share towels or soap. It is also important not to share water bottles. All equipment should be washed on a regular basis.

If an athlete has a cut or open sore, it should be examined by a coach or athletic trainer. Cuts and sores should remain covered and clean. Whirlpools and cold tubs should not be used when an athlete has an open cut or sore, and athletes must shower before using this type of equipment.
