DVT and its Link to Birth Control Pills

Supplemental estrogen, such as that contained in Yaz, Yasmin and other drospirenone-containing birth control pills, reportedly increases the likelihood of deep vein thrombosis, particularly for those who smoke or are overweight. In 2011, a FDA study examined the medical history of more than 800,000 women who took birth control pills over a seven-year period. Reportedly, women who took Yaz and other oral contraceptives containing drospirenone were 75% more likely to develop venous thromboembolic events (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) compared to patients using older birth control pills. An August 2009 study in the British Medical Journal adds further evidence to the blood clot risk, finding that drospirenone birth control pills carry a 6.3-fold increase in the risk of venous thrombosis.
