Raptiva Side Effects

Raptiva Side Effects

While Raptiva can significantly reduce the symptoms of psoriasis, the degree to which it suppresses the immune system also puts the patient at risk for infections and other medical complications. Some serious side effects of Raptiva that have been reported include:

Thrombocytopenia: Published reports have noted an increased tendency for thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts) in Raptiva patients. Platelets help your blood clot, and low platelets give you a higher chance for bleeding. Bruising, bleeding gums, pinpoint-sized red or purple dots under the skin are among the possible symptoms of thrombocytopenia.

Invasive Fungal Disease: Invasive fungal disease is a fungal infection that can spread throughout the body. It can occur in several different ways, depending on the type of bacteria involved and the parts of the body that are affected. Some of the bacteria that cause Invasive Fungal Disease can be treated with medication, but others are more difficult to treat.

Lymphoma: Patients being treated with Raptiva also have an increased risk of contracting cancers such as lymphoma, which is a form of cancer that attacks the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are the glands located throughout the body that filter bacteria and malignant cells from the body. Warning signs of lymphoma include pain and/or swelling of the neck, unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats and itchiness in several areas of the body.

Anemia: Raptiva may cause may cause low blood counts in some patients due to the breakdown of red blood cells. Symptoms of anemia include lightheadedness, dizziness upon standing, weakness, or jaundice.

The most common Raptiva side effectsthat patients experience include headaches, upper respiratory infections, chills, nausea, fever, muscle aches, and back pain. Some individuals have also reported experiencing swelling of the arms or legs (peripheral edema) and worsening or new arthritis while taking Raptiva. These less serious side effects were usually experienced within the first 48 hours of receiving a Raptiva injection, and they often stop within the first few weeks of Raptiva treatment.
