Stream Energy, Ignite Lawsuit

A number of complaints have surfaced in recent years against Stream Energy and Ignite. Stream Energy and Ignite operate a so-called “multi-level marketing” plan to help persuade people to switch to Stream Energy for electricity and natural gas. Ignite “associates” and “directors” reportedly earn commissions based on the number of new customers they can sign up to join the marketing program, who can then make money themselves by encouraging others to join.

While a federal lawsuit is pending against Stream Energy alleging that the company is essentially a pyramid scheme in violation of federal and state laws, our attorneys believe that the company may also be violating consumer protection laws by overcharging its customers and engaging in false advertising. In addition to allegedly overcharging for electricity and natural gas services, Stream Energy may also be wrongfully imposing “early termination” fees of between $25 and $100 on customers who seek to switch energy providers.

• “I thought I signed up for a 12 month fixed rate but they put me on a month to month after 6 months adding about 40 percent to the price.”

• “My electricity bill is at $620 a month now and I know I’m being charged too much. Stream Energy put me on a 9.2 percent rate and the bill increased by $120. What a headache and I’m so frustrated. I have referred so many people to Stream and now I’m devastated.”

• “I renewed my yearly contract and several months later I noticed this huge bill. I called them and they said I didn’t renew my contact and that I was getting charged month-to-month rates. Luckily, I have a copy of the contract but in the meantime they would not listen and refused to believe this was the wrong rate.”
