A chilblain is an ulcer that generally occurs on the extremities as a result of exposure to extreme cold or humidity. Chilblains cause the surrounding area to become red and itchy. They should be kept warm and scratching should be avoided.
Chilblains are classified as a contraindication, which means they should not be massaged because it will only cause more damage to the injury and slow the healing process. Massaging chilblains only causes pain and irritates the affected area further.
