Every year many people head out to lakes, creeks and rivers to go canoeing and kayaking. Anyone who does should understand a few safety guidelines. They are easy to follow and key element in the personal security of everyone involved.
Inspect your equipment.
It is important to make sure you have the proper equipment, and that it is in good working condition. Look over your canoe or kayak and check it for holes, dents or other damage that could cause the boat to sink or crash. Bring along plenty of paddles as they are easy to lose. You won't want to be out on the water without a paddle. Never get into any vessel without wearing a Coast Guard approved life vest. If your canoe or kayak were to capsize, the vest will help keep you afloat and safe.
Before your trip begins
Write down a complete itinerary and let others know when and where you are going, and for how long. Be sure that someone knows where you will be and when you should return. Take at least one other person with you, and they should also turn in an itinerary. When you have someone with you, the two of you can work together and watch out for each other. Prior to leaving for your trip, check the weather conditions to avoid storms or other bad conditions.
Bring all necessary items.
When you are packing for your trip, there are several things you should make sure you have available. Never set out without a fully stocked first aid kit. Your trip will take you away from civilization, and therefore away from medical assistance, so it is essential to have a professional kit with you for emergencies. Always carry a cell phone or a water proof radio so you can contact others or call for help if the need arises. Take sun screen and bug repellent to protect your skin and avoid bites. It's also a good idea to carry extra clothes in case you fall into the water. Keep all of these items in air tight, water proof bags, so that they will remain dry even if your vessel tips over. Attach the bags to your boat to be sure you will not lose them.
Preparing to launch
There are a few important guidelines to follow before you set out on the water. While it is important to carry a few emergency items, it is equally important not bring too many things with you. A vessel that is overloaded with extras such as coolers, radios or other personal items is likely to be off balance and tip over. Not only could this cause you to lose your belongings, it could be very dangerous depending on how cold the water is and how fast the water is flowing. Distribute the weight of everything you bring with you evenly throughout the vessel. One item you should not bring is alcohol. Drinking alcohol slows down your reaction time and thought process. When you are out on the water, you must have a clear mind, quick reflexes and be ready for sudden changes in the speed of the water current. Don't risk putting yourself and others in danger by drinking during the journey.
Stay safe on the water.
Find out about the area you plan to canoe or kayak down. Does it have rapids, mini waterfalls, difficult to maneuver turns and other rough areas? Avoid places that are beyond your skill level and watch out for flood zones or other areas that may have a lot of debris. It is easy for your vessel to get snagged or caught up on downed trees or other obstructions. While in your vessel, remain seated and relaxed. Standing up or playing around in the boat can lead to tipping it over.
If you are tipped over
Falling into the water is not uncommon when canoeing and kayaking. The most important thing is to remain calm, and work towards getting back into the vessel. Grab an oar if you can so that you will have a way to steer the vessel. If the water is very cold, work as quickly as you can to get out and dry off. If possible, turn the boat back over so you can get in, otherwise climb onto the bottom of the boat or at least hang on to the side and get to land. Once you are dry and have the boat flipped over properly, you will be ready to resume your journey.
Canoeing and kayaking are a great way to get exercise, enjoy nature and spend a fun day on the water. When you go, remember to take the necessary precautions and stay safe.
