Approximately 8.7 million people in the United States suffer from bursitis. A bursa is a small sack of fluid that helps joints move smoothly. A hard impact onto the back of the elbow or applying constant pressure to the elbow can cause the bursa to become inflamed, resulting in elbow pain and swelling. In the case of bursitis, or student elbow, the pain radiates from below the tip of the elbow, where the bursa is located. Symptoms include painful swelling on the back of the elbow, limited mobility and pain while at rest and while exercising.
Bursitis can be prevented by avoiding spending long periods of time leaning on the elbows. It is also helpful to wear elbow guards when taking part in activities where the elbow is susceptible to being hit.
To treat bursitis, resting an applying ice are usually all that is needed. However, a specialist may be inclined to drain some of the bursa's excess fluid. In very serious cases, in which the injury does not heal in time, surgery may be needed.
