Popcorn Lung

Bronchiolitis Obliterans due to Microwave Popcorn Flavoring

Bronchiolitis Obliterans is the formal name for Popcorn Lung Disease. It is a rare and irreversible disease of the lungs that is caused by breathing the artificial butter vapors from microwave popcorn. Victims of Popcorn Lung Disease often require lung transplants, as they are the only possible cure.

Bronchiolitis Obliterans is a lung disorder in which the bronchioles (airway branches in the lungs) are blocked by granulation tissue. It appears that Bronchiolitis Obliterans is caused by Diacetyl, an artificial flavoring used to give butter flavor to microwave popcorn. It is generally considered to be toxic. While there are other causes of the disease, by far the most common cause of Bronchiolitis Obliterans is exposure to artificial popcorn butter vapors.

Bronchiolitis Obliterans is sometimes misdiagnosed as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, or emphysema, because some of the symptoms, such as a dry cough, phlegm production, and shortness of breath, are similar. Other symptoms of Bronchiolitis Obliterans include:

  • Irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes, and respiratory system
  • Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  • Fatigue
  • Fever and aches
  • Severe skin irritation
