Bone Spurs
Protruding boney growths called heel spurs can form on the underside of the heel bone, causing pain whenever pressure is applied to the area. Heel spurs stretch the tissue that connects the heel and the ball of the foot and repeatedly tears at the membrane that covers the heel bone. Sometimes, people can feel pain even when there is no indication of bone enlargement. This condition is known as "heel spur syndrome."
Heel spurs can be treated with the exact same treatment used for plantar fasciitis: rest, icing, stretching and exercise, anti-inflammatory medication, orthotics, night splints, cortisone injections and, in rare cases, surgery.
