Boating
All boat owners and operators must have a boating license. Just as with driving a car, boaters must be familiar with the mechanics of their boat, proper safety practices and boating regulations.
In order to safely drive a boat, operators have to fulfill the following responsibilities:
- Provider proper boat maintenance so that the vessel is in top operating condition.
- Make sure the boat is fire hazard free and that the bilges are clean.
- Make sure the legally required safety equipment is on board and properly maintained.
- Know how to use the boat's safety equipment.
- File a float plan with a relative or friend.
- Know the operational and handling characteristics of the boat.
- Know boat position and where the boat is headed.
- Don't speed.
- Keep an eye out for changing weather conditions.
- Commit navigation rules to memory.
- Know and obey waterway markers and state and federal boating regulations.
- Always scan all sides of the boat in search of other vessels to avoid collisions.
