Attorney, businessman, philanthropist, celebrity, and political powerbroker (President Obama has been to his house) are all adjectives that accurately describe John Morgan.
Maybe it’s high time, though, that the word “powerful” be added to that list after Morgan was recently named the second most powerful person in Orlando by Orlando Magazine in its latest “50 Most Powerful People in Orlando” issue, which features a compilation of other prominent movers and shakers in Florida’s fifth largest city.
On the list, Morgan fell behind only Buddy Dyer, the mayor of Orlando who, among other activities, started the SunRail service and is opening a new performing arts center in November. Though Morgan’s accomplishments within the legal realm are well-known, his compassion toward his fellow Floridians and well-documented support of the state’s medical marijuana initiative boosted his standing in OM’s annual list. Last year, Morgan was ranked fourth among the city’s most influential citizens.
In addition to his work with United For Care and backing Charlie Crist’s potential run as Florida’s next governor, Morgan is credited with expanding his law firm substantially in recent years, with a roster of more than 1,000 attorneys and new offices as far away as Mississippi, New York, and Tennessee. Perhaps most worthy of recognition, however, is the work Morgan and his wife, Ultima, put in with the Second Harvest Food Bank, which opened a new collection and distribution center in Central Florida last year thanks in part to the power couple’s generosity.
