Avalanches

An avalanche is a sudden and rapid flow of snow down a mountainside. Avalanches are among the most serious mountain dangers. Areas with fresh accumulations of wind-driven snow and extremely steep slopes, especially in shaded areas near a ridge, are particularly vulnerable to avalanches.

Avalanche safety tips include:

  • Always travel with a partner.
  • Descend risky areas one by one and watch for avalanche signs.
  • Wear avalanche rescue beacons that signal your location.
  • Carry a small shovel and long probe.
  • Learn to use and practice using rescue equipment.
  • If caught in an avalanche grab onto a tree.
  • If swept away, swim to the surface.
