Allergy Prevention

In treating asthma and allergies in children, doctors and parents should be aiming to reduce the side effects of medicine and encourage them to lead as normal a life as possible. Establishing which allergens bother your children through skin or blood testing will help you decide which of the following preventative measures to implement:

  • Remove carpeting that holds in allergens, and replace it with a hard surface (e.g., hardwood flooring).
  • Use lightweight, breathable blankets and bedspreads on beds.
  • Wash clothes in hot water.
  • Close the windows in the morning, evening, and overnight to keep allergens from entering the home unnecessarily.
  • Rid children's' bedrooms of dust mites because those that are allergic to them and suffer from asthma will see a drastic improvement in lung function and not have to rely on medication to treat allergies to the same extent as before.
  • Avoid using items with irritants and odors that can promote allergies (e.g., perfume, tobacco, cologne). Viruses, such as the rhinovirus responsible for causing the common cold, are more likely to trigger asthma attacks in children than any other stimulant. This is a problem because presently, there is no remedy to flush it out of our systems, and we have no choice but to let it take its course. However, flu vaccines and other allergen-fighting agents that are proven safe for children will really help combat this issue.
  • Changes in weather can really provoke asthma and other allergy symptoms. During the warmer months when pollen is present (e.g., spring), allergic reactions often peak. These kinds of seasonal factors are essentially impossible to avoid.
  • Parents should schedule outside playtime for their kids during parts of the day where the pollen count is low. This is often the case in the afternoon or evening.
  • If your child enjoys helping out with gardening, vacuuming, or dusting around the house, these are all activities that may fuel allergies. Encourage them to wear a mask (e.g., painter's mask) while participating.
