Acute Patella Injury

The patella (kneecap) can be injured by a direct blow or fall onto the front of the knee. It is possible for the patella to be dislocated or fractured. The knee should be X-Rayed to get a correct diagnosis.

If there is no sign of a fracture, the injury generally heals itself with rest and icing. Taping the patella will help to give it extra support so that it can heal properly. If a fracture occurs, then a splint will need to be applied to keep the leg straight for a few weeks. However, serious fractures require surgery.
