Acute Phosphate Nephropathy

Acute phosphate nephropathy has been linked to the use of oral sodium phosphate solutions, including Fleet Phospho-Soda. Also known as acute nephrocalcinosis, acute phosphate nephropathy can cause kidney failure, which can require ongoing dialysis or kidney transplant. In some cases, acute phosphate nephropathy can even lead to death.

If you or a loved one has developed acute phosphate nephropathy or other kidney problems as a side effect of Fleet Phospho-Soda, fill out our free, no risk case evaluation form.

Oral sodium phosphate solutions, such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, can cause hyperphosphatemia and decreased intravascular volume. Hyperphosphatemia increases the amount of phosphate in the kidney tubules, while decreased intravascular volume further increases the phosphate concentration in the kidney tubular fluid. Consequently, this can cause calcium-phosphate crystals to build up in the renal tubules.

Symptoms of acute phosphate nephropathy include:

  • Malaise
  • Decreased urine
  • Drowsiness
  • Lethargy
  • Swelling of the ankles, feet and legs

The FDA has reported that 21 people have developed acute phosphate nephropathy as a result of oral sodium phosphate solutions, including Fleet Phospho-Soda. Unfortunately, C.B. Fleet continued to market Fleet Phospho-Soda even when reports surfaced that it could be linked to serious kidney problems.

The Fleet Phospho-Soda lawyers at Morgan and Morgan aim to make manufacturers responsible for the unreported side effects of their products. If you or a loved one has developed acute phosphate nephropathy or any other kidney problems, our Fleet Phospho-Soda attorneys can help.
